Customized employment, telecommuting
Telecommuting means working from home full-time or several days out of the work week. Someone who telecommutes may be an independent contractor, an entrepreneur or an employee of an organization that has telecommuting work options.
U.S. Department of Commerce, Economics and Statistics Administration, BUREAU OF THE CENSUS, a 1990 census brief reported that about 3 % of at-home workers earned more than $75,000 a year.
The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), an agency of the U.S. Department of Labor, established a Customized Employment initiative to build the capacity of workforce systems to serve all customers, including individuals with disabilities. The emerging global economy is creating jobs that cannot be accomplished under 9 to 5 model or not necessarily need to be performed in the employer’s workplace. Further, workers are demanding more autonomy, more freedom, more customization of the terms and conditions of their employment. The world of work is changing to merge the demands of the new workplace and the needs of the workforce. One approach that has emerged is customized employment or work at home.
